Putting it on hold…

Last night I had dinner with a few dear friends. Justin brought up a point that has had me thinking all morning…

“What if the Christian church, as a whole, decided to put the issue of homosexuality on hold for five years – honestly said we’re not going to bring this up again until 2014 – and instead dedicated the next five years to solving poverty…an issue that is mention 2,000 times in the Bible. And once that’s taken care of, we can turn our gaze back to the thing that is mentioned 4 times.”

So? What if?

you know me… I’m all about doing anything we can to solve the issues of poverty and caring for the poor. And there are a lot of things we could stop spending our energy on to re-focus ourselves on the issues of Matthew 25. My concern about “not bringing up homosexuality for 5 years”… is that the avoidance of the topic won’t teach us to love better.

If we want to love the gay population better and create environments that would welcome them into our churches to experience and to explore Christianity (for those who aren’t Christians)… avoiding the subject creates the “elephant in the room” affect.

If any church is dealing with the topic of homosexuality in a manner of pointing the finger with a hell & damnation sermon… then they should not just stop 5 just years… they should stop forever. If they would like to begin addressing the topic from a view-point of love and kindness… then go for it.

    But don’t forget the poor.

Say Something ...and it better be smart!
