I tend to deal with this by taking it out on others in snide or side-handed comments that they are not worthy of. I also find that I have learned not to expect anything from people as a defense mechanism(like you might be saying here...I don't know). This is faulty thinking and I understand that, but in my head if I don't give them any credit to begin with, then they can't lose any. I hope this makes sense. It's something I'm working on also.
